Do I look healthy to you?

Would you guess that I’ve got a health condition?

It’s interesting isn’t it, that on the outside it can appear as if nothing is going on. Well, I have to tell you that what goes on beneath the surface is not always a match to outward appearance. I’m sure many of you are aware of this.

This is especially the case for autoimmune diseases. When the body wants to attack itself and there is a war going on inside, no one would ever know the symptoms that are being experienced.

Confession: I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. A condition where my immune system is attacking my thyroid gland triggering all kinds of weird symptoms and reactions.

This disease is so common, however many aren’t properly diagnosed unless you get the proper testing. I was officially given the word over a year ago. Although I had been dealing with certain symptoms for a few years, finally my test results proved this was the case for me.

Just like with any autoimmune condition, it always comes back to the gut. It also comes down to back tracking what took place in my life, specific triggers whether emotional, physical or even food related that could have set my system off. It took me time to take inventory of all these things combined to figure out a plan. Years leading up to me finding out I had Hashimoto’s, I had been around the block an back trying to figure out what was going on with me.

If you’ve been following me for a while you may know that I have been deep into healing, protocols, supplements, gut tests, changing my diet – so many things at play to help make things better or at least manageable for now.

I’m only human after all

There are still moments when I’m at the end of my rope with my health and I want to scream (and cry and throw things). I’m doing so much good, so much right but it doesn’t always add up to the way I’m feeling .

This is especially true with an autoimmune condition – I can be eating the “perfect” diet, practicing all the “right” lifestyle habits but my body has another plan for the day or the moment.

It’s times like these that I have to stop and remind myself that I’m doing great and to send myself some serious TLC. And not to be too hard on myself, or condemn myself. I am only human after all and I’m doing so well.

So then, I just keep going, keep pushing forward and striving for balance. I do what I know how to do best {eat well & live well} and set the intention that I’ve got this. Because deep down I know that I do!

It’s not enough to feel good, when you can feel great!

However, something I have realized throughout this journey is that it’s not enough to feel good, when I can feel great! I really couldn’t distinguish what that meant over a year ago.

I felt pretty good, I was doing all the “right” things for my health, yet I still felt dragged down and not like myself.

It’s especially frustrating when you think you’ve done everything.

But the only thing that I hadn’t done yet, was to wait. Let things change slowly over time. Let my body adapt to new protocols, supplements, lifestyle changes, diet modifications – it all takes time.

Healing doesn’t come overnight and for everyone it is different. It’s a heck of a lot of trial and error and ebbs and flows, but if you trust and are consistent you will see changes. Maybe not all at once, but they will come.

To give you a snapshot of some of my symptoms I had a year ago they included:

  • feeling exhausted
  • itchy ears
  • puffy face and body
  • weight fluctuations
  • hair thickness changes
  • irritability
  • dark circles under eyes
  • thinning of eyebrows
  • high antibodies
  • low vitamin D

I can’t say all of these are perfect or totally better but there is surely an upward swing. This is a result of all of the efforts I have put into making my health and hashimoto’s a priority. I am so keen to help you with your symptoms and get you feeling better.

Let me explain how.

The idea came to me in restorative yoga last fall. I was thinking about how frustrated I have been working through the many symptoms of Hashimotos. Not only that, but realizing that many other women must be feeling the same way.

Here I am a nutritionist and health enthusiast and I’m encountering so many health challenges ?

I knew that my friend Samantha Gladish was going through something similar and we had to create something together.

It took some time to put the pieces together but now our new baby is out into the world for round two. The classes have begun, so it’s too late to join now. But head over to the website to get on the waiting list for the next one!
